Between Spring and Mountain: Crossing the Lower Galilee on Foot
A practical field guide to the Jesus Trail, Nahal Tzipori and ancient Zippori
Three trails, three moods
1. Jesus Trail — Section 1: Nazareth → Cana
14.2 km, 4.5–6 h, moderate. Climb Nazareth's stepped alleys to the Mount Jonah ridge, descend through olive groves via Mashhad to Kafr Kanna. Water only in villages; 35% shade. Season: Oct–May. Markers: white-orange-white.
2. Nahal Tzipori — the Monks' Mill
From Ras Ali car park, a 2.2 km accessible promenade (asphalt and wooden deck), or continue to Ein Yivka (6.8 km). Stream water is not potable; wading is at your own risk — not a declared bathing site. Free, 24/7; flash-flood warning in winter.
3. Zippori National Park
The ancient Galilee capital: the "Mona Lisa of the Galilee", the zodiac floor, a Roman theatre and an underground water system. Paved decks — highly accessible. Paid; book ahead on the INPA site.
Logistics
- Kit: 3 L water per person for the Jesus Trail, hat, hiking shoes.
- Transport: the Jesus Trail is point-to-point — return from Cana to Nazareth by bus/taxi (~15 min).
- Combine: Day 1 Jesus Trail; Day 2 Nahal Tzipori morning + national park midday.
