Galilée de pierre et d’esprit : Antonio Barluzzi et Giovanni Muzio

A comparative architectural reading of the North's two great Christian monuments

Par מערכת GALIL.APP· 17/09/2026· 7 min

Two architects, two mountains, two ideas of the sacred

On the summit of Mount Tabor stands Antonio Barluzzi's Basilica of the Transfiguration (1924). In the heart of Nazareth, Giovanni Muzio's Basilica of the Annunciation was consecrated in 1969. Less than 15 km apart — and nearly half a century of architectural thought.

Barluzzi: light through alabaster

Building on Byzantine and Crusader remains in local basalt and limestone, Barluzzi replaced stained glass with alabaster panels that flood the nave with soft, milky light. A golden mosaic of the Transfiguration glows in the apse — the whole space recalls the cloud that descended on the mountain (Matthew 17).

Muzio: concrete, lily and mosaics from the world

Muzio, a leading Milanese modernist, went the other way: sensitive brutalism. Exposed patterned concrete and a vast dome shaped like an inverted lily — Mary's symbol of purity — over the grotto. The lower level is intimate and rock-cut; the upper is luminous and monumental. The courtyard holds dozens of Madonna mosaics donated from Japan to Mexico.

On the ground

  • Tabor: arrive before 11:00 — gates lock 12:00–14:00. Walk the summit loop for the views.
  • Nazareth: the grotto opens 05:45; the upper basilica 08:00. No lunch closure.

Tip: Tabor in the morning, Nazareth in the afternoon — Barluzzi's alabaster glows at dawn, Muzio's dome before sunset.
