Nazaret: una ciudad de historias

A walking journey through the Old City — where ancient alleys hide living treasures.

Where the story begins

Nazareth is not a museum piece frozen in amber. It is a living, breathing city where church bells and muezzin calls mark the hours, where the smell of fresh knafeh drifts from stone ovens, and where pilgrims and locals share the same narrow streets.

The Old City's maze of alleys hides treasures at every turn — a 200-year-old olive press, a spice shop unchanged for generations, a family bakery where the recipe hasn't changed in 80 years.

You haven't truly been to Nazareth until you've gotten lost in the Old City. That's where the real magic happens.

A city of two faiths

The Basilica of the Annunciation, the largest church in the Middle East, towers over the city center. Built on the site where, according to tradition, the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, it welcomes millions of visitors each year.

Just a short walk away, the White Mosque stands as a symbol of the city's Muslim heritage. The coexistence of these two faiths, side by side, is what gives Nazareth its unique character.

Food as identity

If there's one thing that unites Nazareth's communities, it's food. The city's restaurants range from humble hummus joints to upscale Levantine kitchens, each with its own take on traditional dishes.

  • Knafeh — the queen of Nazareth sweets, best eaten warm
  • Musakhan — caramelized onions on taboon bread
  • Maqluba — the famous "upside-down" rice dish

Beyond the city

Nazareth is the gateway to the Galilee. From here, day trips reach the Sea of Galilee, Mount Tabor, and the villages of Lower Galilee — each with their own stories to tell.

Where to eat after the Old City

After the basilica, market and Old City lanes, you can continue to Shaabi Nazareth at Tawfiq Ziad St 37. The branch is open daily 10 AM–4 AM and serves Nazareth shawarma with Galilee character, including charcoal-grilled lamb, veal and turkey.

That keeps the visitor journey connected to the city: see Nazareth, walk Nazareth, and eat Nazareth.
