St. Gabriel's Greek Orthodox Church / Mary's Well
The 1750 Greek Orthodox church over Mary's spring — carved iconostasis and a crypt with running water.
An impressive Orthodox church from 1750 built over Crusader remains. According to Orthodox tradition and the Gospel of James, Mary first heard the angel here while drawing water. At the end of the underground crypt the waters of Mary's spring still flow through an ancient channel; the hall is adorned with a magnificent carved wooden iconostasis and frescoes. Modest dress; no flash; do not photograph clergy or worshippers in the crypt; free entry. Informal lunch break 13:00–14:00. Sunday liturgy until 11:00 — visits from 11:30. Upper hall accessible via one step; the crypt and spring are not accessible.
